How Much Local History Do You Know?

Fort Myers has a fascinating history that dates back to its founding on February 21, 1866, when Captain Manuel A. Gonzalez established the community after the Civil War. Having delivered mail and supplies to Union forces during the Seminole Indian Wars, Gonzalez was well-acquainted with the area surrounding the abandoned fort. He created the region’s first trading post, exchanging goods with the neighboring Seminole people and laying the foundation for what would become a thriving coastal city.

The community’s transformation accelerated in the late 19th century as wealthy northerners discovered Florida’s winter appeal. In 1885, the town was officially incorporated with 349 residents, making it the second-largest settlement on Florida’s Gulf Coast south of Cedar Key. That same year marked a pivotal moment when inventor Thomas Edison visited Fort Myers and purchased 13 acres along the Caloosahatchee River. His winter home, Seminole Lodge, would become a hub of innovation where he conducted botanical research and experiments.

Edison’s presence attracted other industrial giants, including Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone, who also established winter estates in Fort Myers. Together, these visionaries formed an exclusive group known as the “Millionaires’ Club” and worked on groundbreaking projects, including Edison’s search for a domestic rubber source. Their legacy shaped Fort Myers into the “City of Palms,” named for the royal palms Edison imported to line what is now McGregor Boulevard.

The opening of the Edison Bridge in 1931 sparked significant growth, with new neighborhoods emerging and the population expanding from just 575 in 1890 to over 9,000 by 1930. Today, visitors can tour the historic Edison and Ford Winter Estates, celebrating the innovative spirit that helped define this remarkable Gulf Coast community.
